SPOTLIGHT / MUSIC CENTER / Contemporary Instrumental Music

The Contemporary Instrumental Music (CIM) category replaces the Jazz Instrumental Category.  Jazz Instrumental will become one of two subcategories: Jazz Instrumental and Popular & Rock Instrumental.  The subcategory of Popular/Rock Instrumental includes Popular, Rock, Folk Rock, R&B/Urban, and Latin/Salsa/Samba. You may apply in only one of these subcategories; you may apply with more than one instrument in your chosen subcategory.  See CIM program rules for more information. RULES

JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL:

• Jazz Instrumental MUST include improvisation in performance This is the ability to create new motifs,
melodies, and rhythms that are suggested by the harmonic structure (chord progression) of the
composition
• The instrument to be judged should predominate
• Song form should consist of: melody, 2 choruses of improvised solo, melody
• Backing tracks, such as the Aebersold tracks, are permitted, as are recorded tracks

Choose ONE Jazz song from the list below to play for your video submission:

  • 1.  All The Things You Are
  • 2.  Body & Soul – August 9
  • 3.  I Got Rhythm (or contrafact)
  • 4.  I’ll Remember April (for Bass – 4 total choruses: melody, solo, walking, melody)
  • 5.  Straight, No Chaser (Monk) (three or four choruses on this piece, blues)
  • 6.  Nica’s Dream (Silver)
  • 7.  Con Alma (Gillespie)
  • 8.  Stablemates (Golson)

    • APPLICATION
    • The deadlines for the 2024 application cycle is Friday, October 13, 2023, at 8:59 PM PT (just before 9pm)
    • Each year, the application opens in June and closes in October. Visit youngarts.org/apply for more information.
    • Please submit a total of three (3) individual digital video recordings that include the following and in the
      following order:

      • BLUES > CHI-CHI
        One of the following 12-bar blues pieces composed by Charlie Parker: “Billie’s Bounce”, “Chi

        Chi”, or “Big Foot”.  MUST BE PERFORMED at a tempo marking of 180 bpm (quarter note
        equals 180) and must include at least three choruses of solos. Rhythm section players must
        play at least two choruses of accompaniment in addition to their solos (bass player must
        show their walking abilities).
      • BALLAD >  RUBY MY DEAR
        A jazz ballad of your choice which must include at least one chorus of solo. If submitting

        in Piano or Guitar, you must perform the entire selection solo, and should include a rubato
        phrase.  No original compositions.
      • UPTEMPO > STABLEMATESCONCERT CHART IMAGE
        An up-tempo tune in any jazz style, except blues, at a tempo marking between 200 to

        240 bpm and must include at least three choruses of solos. Selections from composers
        such as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Horace Silver, Duke
        Ellington, Herbie Hancock, or George Gershwin are suggested but not required. No original
        compositions
