CLARINET LESSON / FOCUS

  • HONOR BAND > SCSBOA Submission Deadline: November 20, 11:59 PM
      • MEMORIZE for a better recording >> Ab & G scales need to be very close to 96bpm (fast!)
      • Chromatic > all in ONE BREATH > 96bpm or faster (faster is easier)
  • REVIEW Clarinet embouchure video > click
  • Long tones on a scale or scales.
      • 16 beats > 8 beats crescend / 8 (or) MORE beats decresending to nothingness. 
      • Metronome = 60 bpm (opt 70 bpm)
      • Start from a whisper (minimal air) – then hold for 4 beats, then crescend –  and get to 30db (decibels) then decrescendo until it fades out 
          • 10/14 – Your LOW A, Bb, B, C — Then middle B, C, D, E, F, G
          • 10/7 – Concert D 
  • Agoura Audition scales: 
      • Concert G, D & Ab (full range). All in one breath.
      • G chromatic & D chromatic
  • 9/9/25 – “Air Starts” on high notes. Practical Studies. F Major Scale Etude.

AE WRIGHT BAND & JAZZ

AGOURA HS AUDITION (MAY OR JUNE 2026)

  • CLARINET / CONCERT BAND
    •  Concert Ab, G and D Major the full range of your instrument + Chromatic Scale (E1 to E4 and back)
        • Bb1 to F4 to F1 to Bb1 <– hold last note
        • A1 to E4 to E1 to A1 <— hold last note
        • E1 to E4 to E1 <– hold last note
    • Chromatic scale one octave. Bonus – play 3 octaves! *Use your chromatic fingerings. 
    • Clarinet etude: Allegretto Grazioso > Melody > Melody/Slower > Piano Track
  • JAZZ TENOR > Jazz III (Jazz B)
        • Play the following major scales the full range of your instrument: Ab, G and D Major and a chromatic scale one octave.
        • Prepare a short classical etude on Tenor Sax > C major & A minor (progressive studies)
        • Play the melody for “Tenor Madness” once — and prepare/play two choruses of a 12 bar Bb blues solo using transcribed licks. Then play the melody one more time

  • LESSON FOCUS:
  • CLARINET
  • TENOR SAXOPHONE:
      • WARM-UP by playing your chromatic scale up and back over, while learning to “memorize” those notes.
      • LONG TONES > Set your metronome to 60 – and keep score on how many beats you can hold the notes for. 
      • BLUES SCALE > Practice the Bb concert blues scale, by just playing it up and back over and over to get “muscle memory”.  
      • New fingering! The Bb “bis” fingering for speed and smoothness in your playing and eventual “soloing”
