LESSON OVERVIEW

  1. WARM-UP:  15-20 mins
      1. Major scales > 4 beats each at 80bpm (Concert C & G)
      2.  6/17/25 Universal Method — “playing soft” — #50 & 52 – and then choose to do more if you have time >> #44, #45, 46 & 48 (or rotate as you wish).
        Each exercise at 72-bpm. >> Try to spend about 15 mins on this each time your practice to build tone. 
  2.  CHROMATIC SCALE WORKOUT: from memory or practice using the fingering chart on pages 30/31 in the Essential Elements Book
      • 3-note slurs with a pause. 
      • NEW – 6/17/25 —  Practical Studies Chromatic worksheet (loose sheet)
      • Helps to check that all keys are working properly like G# & Eb keys that get “stuck”.
      • Use chromatic Bb fingering (A + the side key)
  3.  EMBOUCHURE TIPS:  Pull your bottom lip back for better tone. Less “pinching” of the reed.
  4. TONGUING TIP(S) — “Tip of the tongue to the tip of the reed (or the blade of the reed)”
